You’ve found a lost pet. Now what?

Microchip Scan Station allows finders to scan lost or stray pets for a microchip, follow the instructions below to help reunite lost pets without bringing them into the shelter.

Check for Identification or Scan for Microchip

Check the animal for forms of ID, such as tags, tattoos, or a microchip. To see if an animal has a microchip, contact local veterinarian offices to see if they can scan the pet for a microchip or visit a community microchip scan station.

    How to Scan for the Microchip

  1. Press the red button to power the scanner on.

  2. Still pressing the red button continuously, hold the scanner with the red “scanning” sensor pointed down toward the pet and begin slowly scanning the animal’s back, starting at the neck and working your way all the way down to the pet’s tail, in an S-shaped pattern.     1. If a chip is found—The scanner will beep and display the chip number on the screen. Write down the chip number exactly as displayed.

Yes, There was a Microchip!

  1. Hold on to the pet to reunite with the family.

  2. Match the number of the microchip to the microchip brand. View the list of microchip brands here. (PDF)

  3. Call the company that matches the microchip to file a found pet report and see if that is the registry that has the pet owner's information.

No, There was Not a Microchip!

  1. Share the pet’s details online by posting about the animal on social media or share the information to other public platforms (include picture(s), location found with city and cross streets)

Walk the Pet Around the Area Where They Were Found

If found in a neighborhood or heavily populated area, try walking the pet around to see if someone recognizes the pet.

Bring the Pet to a Shelter

If you cannot find an owner through the steps above, bring the pet to a shelter.
